While the word “retreat” may be misunderstood by the uninitiated, it is actually an exercise which helps us to move forward in our spiritual life.

The annual retreat is a regular fixture in the Christ Church calendar and takes place on a weekend (from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) in May or June. The first retreats took place in Vienna at the end of the 1960’s before transferring to the Cistercian Monastery of Heiligenkreuz which is nestled in the Vienna Woods. Retreatants repaired to this beautiful ancient place of worship for many years before moving to the present venue of Stift Göttweig. This baroque Benedictine monastery, whose origins date back to 1094, is perched atop a hill in Lower Austria and offers a stunning view of the Danube Valley and its vineyards.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Church Retreat moved online. It was led by the Revd Canon Angela Tilby. We are grateful to Angela for leading this. There was a lot to take in during the retreat and it might be helpful to revisit one or other of the retreat sessions. As such, we are making the recordings of the retreat available here:
